Deconstructing Damian

I’m very happy to have found this Tumblr blog, but I’m also upset at myself for having not realized it existed before.

This blog, as its title suggests, dissects the ins and outs of Damian Wayne, the son of Bruce Wayne and current Robin in the DC Comics universe. Damian and the dynamic he adds to Batman is the sole reason I read the Batman Incorporated and Batman and Robin titles.

I’ve been asked a couple times what my fascination with young Damian is and it’s oftentimes hard to describe. I mean, he is a 10-year-old killer — there’s a lot to not like about Damian. However, at his purest Damian is a young boy caught between two parents (two parents that are completely different) that he wants to please. He wants his mother to be proud of what he’s become and what she raised despite her not being pleased that he fights with the good guys. He also wants to prove to Bruce that he has what it takes to supplant him as Batman someday even though every instinct in his body forces him to adopt tactics not supported by Batman (mainly the fact he willingly, and enjoys, killing the opposition).

There’s of course more to it than that. Needless to say reading the backlog of this site will be on my to-do list this week.
